Best Time to Visit Tanzania for Your Tanzania 10 Day Safari Itinerary

The best time for a Tanzania 10 Day Safari Itinerary especially to witness the Mara River crossings is during the dry season from late July to September, with peak crossings in August. During these months, the plains open up, water sources concentrate wildlife, and every game drive becomes a front-row seat to the Great Wildebeest Migration. Early mornings glow with golden light as elephants roam the quiet savannah, while afternoons echo with the thunder of sweeping herds.

In January and February, the herds typically move to the Southern Serengeti, making this ideal for seeing newborn animals in lush, green landscapes. Warm days, clear skies, and intimate wildlife encounters make each season uniquely magical, ensuring an unforgettable Tanzanian safari.

Tanzania 10 Day Safari Itinerary – Weather Summary

Understanding the weather helps you plan your Tanzania 10-day safari, especially if you’re aiming for the Mara River crossing. The June–October dry season offers excellent visibility, mild days around 24–28°C, and the best chance to witness crossings in the Northern Serengeti. November–December short rains bring refreshing greenery with temperatures near 26–30°C. From January–March, warmer conditions of 28–32°C shift the Great Migration south for calving, so two nights usually spent in the Northern Serengeti are substituted with the Southern Serengeti. April–May are wetter, with cooler highs around 22–26°C. Expect cooler 10–18°C temperatures in the Ngorongoro Highlands year-round.

Accommodation & Comfort Level – Tanzania 10 Day Safari Itinerary

Flight Recommendation Given a 10 Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary

To ensure a smooth and comfortable start to your Tanzania safari, we recommend the following flight arrangements.

International Flights

For this Tanzania 10-day safari, the most convenient airport to fly into is:

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Located between Arusha and Moshi, JRO offers the easiest access to key northern parks such as Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. We provide airport pickup from JRO to your lodge in Arusha.

If you plan to extend your trip to Zanzibar or the southern coast after your safari, you may also choose to fly out of:

Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR – Dar es Salaam)
OR
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ – Zanzibar)

Booking an “open-jaw” flight (arriving at JRO and departing from DAR/ZNZ) can save time and avoid unnecessary backtracking.

Domestic Flights

We do not recommend including domestic flights for this itinerary unless we adjust the route. The current flow works best by road.
Each route in our 10-day Tanzania safari has been carefully designed to ensure comfortable travel distances and to maximize your time in the wilderness.

All transfers between destinations are intentionally structured as part of the game-drive experience, allowing you to enjoy wildlife sightings, dramatic landscapes, and cultural encounters along the way.

This overland approach provides:

  • Well-managed travel distances
  • Extended and flexible game-drive opportunities
  • Scenic and immersive transitions between parks
  • A richer overall safari experience

For these reasons, no domestic flights are required or suggested for this program  unless the itinerary is changed completely to a different routing or style of safari which is possible.

However, internal flights can be added for guests who want to shorten certain segments and we are happy to make adjustments that fits your travel needs.

Common possible domestic flight  routes for this itinerary include:

Arusha – Serengeti (Seronera / Kogatende)

  • Flight time: 1-1.5 hours
  • Approximate cost: USD $200-$400 per person one-way

Zanzibar – Serengeti (Seronera / Kogatende)

  • Flight time: 1.5 hours
  • Approximate cost: USD $300-$600 per person one-way

These flights are operated by reputable local airlines, usually aboard modern Caravan Cessna aircraft, and offer spectacular views of Rift Valley escarpments, volcanic highlands, crater lakes, and endless savannah

Important Notes About the Flight Option

Estimated Pricing
The flight prices listed above are approximate guidelines only. Actual fares may vary depending on the airline, seasonal demand, and the number of travelers in your group.

Additional Costs for Flying Into the Serengeti
For guests choosing to fly into the Serengeti, please note that the airfare is not the only cost involved. The safari vehicle and guide must travel to the Serengeti one day before your arrival, which incurs extra transfer expenses as well as additional park fees due to the necessary adjustment of the itinerary routing.

Serengeti Flight Timing & Game Drive Convenience
Flights arriving in the Serengeti typically land at approximately 10:30 AM, allowing you to begin your game drive almost immediately after touchdown. Departing flights usually leave around 11:00 AM, and guests can continue enjoying game viewing up until roughly 30 minutes before check-in time.

Who could ask for more?

Being river crossing time of year our anticipation of this safari to begin our visit to Tanzania was high and was realised.
We departed Arusha and headed for Tarangire National Park. As expected the Elephants were prolific and backed up with many other wildlife to keep us happy as well. We stayed at Elephant Lodge which is constructed from old shipping containers. It was terrific, nice accomodation, food and lovely staff.

An adventure that was beyond my expectations. Brilliant

This was such an amazing trip that covered the Ngorongoro crater area with all its wildlife roaming freely the Serengeti and the migration of the Wildebeests crossing over into Kenya. Wonderful varied accommodation from well equipped tents with all amenities to hotels and lodges. Zebras lions with cubs bathing hippos leopards during the night safari and numerous birds including vultures waiting for their next meal. Elephants and giraffes were everywhere so all in all this was a fabulous tour.

Amazing Trip around Kenya and Tanzania

My wife and I did a 7-day safari with Active Wonders last August, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania, and honestly, we couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. We got super lucky with our drivers and guides Patrick in Kenya and Six in Tanzania were awesome. They really know their stuff, driving like pros without even needing GPS, and they were amazing at spotting animals and finding the best views.

We are definitely going back with them.

If you’re looking for the ultimate safari experience, look no further than Active Wonders Safari! Our adventure in Tanzania and Kenya was nothing short of spectacular, thanks to the impeccable planning and guidance from Allano himself.
From the moment we arrived, Allano took care of every detail, ensuring that our safaris, travel, lodging, and meals were perfectly coordinated. His knowledge and passion for wildlife were evident throughout the journey.

We are definitely going back with them.
