Best time to Visit Serengeti - When and where

The Serengeti is famed for hosting the Great Wildebeest Migration, the world’s largest mammal migration, and offers exceptional game viewing year-round. Planning your safari carefully is crucial, given the park’s vast expanse of approximately 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq miles). The best time to visit Serengeti depends largely on the season of your visit.

Central Serengeti (Seronera Region)

Throughout the year, the Central Serengeti (Seronera Region) boasts rich wildlife due to numerous river valleys. Abundant lions, leopards, and elephants can be spotted. The Wildebeest Migration occurs in this region from April to June and returns from October to December. For those prioritizing the migration, being in the central part during these times is crucial. Stay for at least 1 or 3 nights to fully appreciate the diverse wildlife.

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende Area)

The northern part of the Serengeti comes to life from July to September when the migration resides here. Witness the awe-inspiring river crossings around the Mara River, marked by drama and danger due to fast-flowing water and crocodiles. The remoteness and tranquility of this northern region, a 4-hour drive from the central part, make it an ideal destination. Plan to stay at least 2 nights to enhance the likelihood of witnessing the herds crossing the river and to savor encounters with other wildlife.

Southern Serengeti (Ndutu Area)

From December to Mid-March, the nutrient-rich plains of the Southern Serengeti (Ndutu Area) host the Wildebeest Migration during the green season. February sees half a million calves born on these plains, creating a breathtaking spectacle with hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras. Predators abound, seizing opportunities to consume the placentas of the young calves. Consider spending 1 night in the Ndutu Area during this calving season, or alternatively, allocate 1 day in South Serengeti, especially if entering from the south.

Western Serengeti(Western Corridor)

The Western Serengeti is a hidden gem, often overlooked but offering unique wildlife experiences. The park’s western reaches are characterized by vast plains and graced with resident wildlife populations. From June to August, the Western Serengeti witnesses the migration crossing the Grumeti River, providing a captivating spectacle. This region offers a quieter alternative, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscapes and abundant wildlife without the crowds. Consider dedicating at least 2 nights to explore the Western Serengeti, enhancing your safari with diverse sightings.
