Your family adventure begins with a morning pickup in Arusha followed by an easy 2-hour drive on paved tarmac to Tarangire National Park. For older kids, Tarangire is an open-air classroom featuring colossal baobab trees and Africa’s greatest concentration of elephants.
Spend the day tracking massive family herds along the Tarangire River, observing matriarch behavior, playful calves, lions resting on tree branches, giraffes, and zebras. Teenagers can practice wildlife photography with window seats in your private pop-up roof 4×4.
Enjoy a scenic bush picnic lunch overlooking the river. In the late afternoon, drive up the Great Rift Valley escarpment to your Karatu lodge for a refreshing swim in the pool and dinner.

After breakfast, take a quick 30-minute drive down into Lake Manyara National Park. Older kids will enjoy exploring the lush, underground spring-fed forest home to active troops of olive baboons, blue monkeys, and hornbills.

Ascend the Ngorongoro crater rim, drive across sweeping Maasai savannas past traditional bomas, and enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hill Gate.

Can You See the Great Migration and Mara River Crossings on the 8-Day Tanzania Family Safari?
Each year more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. From July to October the herds reach the Mara River — the most dramatic hour in the bush.
River crossings cannot be guaranteed: herds gather on the banks, sometimes for hours or days, and cross when they choose. Travelling in season with time at the river gives you the best possible odds, with excellent wildlife viewing either way.

July – August (Summer School Holidays)
Dry season: cool mornings, short grass and wildlife gathered near water — the easiest time for children to spot animals. From July the herds reach the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti.
December – January (Christmas Holidays)
Warm weather and green plains, with the calving season beginning in the southern Serengeti.
April – May (Long Rains)
April and May bring the long rains. Some roads become muddy and slow and a few remote camps close, but the landscapes are green and quieter.

This was such an amazing trip that covered the Ngorongoro crater area with all its wildlife roaming freely, the Serengeti and the migration of the wildebeest crossing over into Kenya. They can, but children under 10 often find the 6–7 hour drive to the Northern Serengeti on Day 3 tiring. For younger children we recommend our 5-day or 6-day family safaris.
