Covering 4,471 km² in a remote branch of the Great Rift Valley, Katavi is Tanzania’s connoisseur’s park — one of the least-visited and most pristine wildernesses in Africa. In the dry season the landscape stages some of the most dramatic concentrations of game anywhere on the continent.

Katavi lies in western Tanzania, in a branch of the Great Rift Valley that ends in the marshlands of Lake Rukwa. It is highly remote — far west of Ruaha and southeast of Mahale — which is exactly why it stays so pristine and uncrowded.
The standard route is a scheduled shared charter flight to Ikuu Airstrip inside the park, from Arusha, Dar es Salaam or Ruaha. These typically run twice weekly (Mondays and Thursdays) in the dry season to coordinate Western Circuit transfers.
Yes — like many remote wooded areas, Katavi has active tsetse flies, especially in the denser miombo woodland away from the open floodplains. Their bites can be sharp but pose no health risk. Wear long-sleeved khakis and light neutral tones, and avoid dark blue and black.
Where the Serengeti offers open plains, famous crowds and the migration, Katavi offers the opposite — raw, remote wilderness with almost no other vehicles and dry-season concentrations that rival anything in Africa. It’s for travellers who want solitude over spectacle-with-crowds.
