The dry plains shelter species rarely seen elsewhere in Tanzania — gerenuk, lesser kudu, oryx and the elegant fringe-eared oryx, all adapted to this harsh Sahel-like habitat.

Mkomazi is easily reached by road from Moshi, or from the Usambara and Pare Mountains nearby. Its accessibility from north-east Tanzania makes it a rewarding add-on to a Kilimanjaro or Northern Circuit trip.
Not the full set in the usual sense — but Mkomazi is one of the few places in Tanzania to see wild black rhino, alongside elephant and buffalo. Lions and leopards are present but shy. Its real draw is rhino and wild dog conservation, not a Big Five checklist.
One to two days is enough to experience the highlights — a rhino sanctuary visit, game drives for Sahel wildlife, and some superb birding. It pairs well with the Usambara Mountains or as a stop en route to the coast.
Mkomazi is hot and dusty, so pack lightweight, light-coloured clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Avoid dark blue and black to reduce tsetse-fly attraction, and bring a warm layer for cool mornings.
