The Plains

An endless theatre of the wild

Few places on Earth evoke the raw spirit of wild Africa like the Serengeti. A UNESCO World Heritage Site of sweeping savannah and iconic acacia woodlands, it hosts the most magnificent wildlife migration on the planet — whether you dream of a heart-stopping river crossing or sundowners at a rim lodge.

The Great Migration

A year-round phenomenon

The headline attraction is a circular, continuous journey of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles chasing fertile grazing. It is not a single event, but an ongoing cycle of survival — and knowing where the herds are is critical to planning.

Dry SeasonGreen / Wet Season

The Serengeti is a year-round destination, but matching your travel window to your expectations is crucial. Two distinct seasons, two very different experiences.

Dry Season · June – October — Pristine wildlife viewing. As watering holes dry up, animals gather in dense concentrations around remaining water — sparse vegetation makes predators highly visible.

The Regions

Four wildernesses in one park

The park is massive, and each region offers unique landscapes, varying predator-to-prey ratios, and distinct luxury lodgings. Where you base yourself shapes the entire safari.

Central Serengeti region of the Serengeti 01
Seronera Valley

Central Serengeti

The predator capital of East Africa — lush valleys and rugged granite kopjes. Home to exceptional year-round resident wildlife, with the park’s highest concentration of leopards, cheetahs, and lion prides.

Grumeti & Mbalageti

Western Corridor

A narrow strip of valley running toward Lake Victoria, flanked by two rivers. Dense riverine forests, open black-clay plains, and massive resident pods of hippos and giant Nile crocodiles.

Kogatende

Northern Serengeti

A pristine, less-crowded wilderness of rolling hills and open woodlands. The premier base if your goal is a dramatic, multi-herd Mara River crossing during the dry season.

Ndutu

Southern Plains

An endless vista of short-grass plains, virtually devoid of trees. Spectacular during the green season when the migration settles here, blanketing the plains with millions of animals.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

We recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 days to fully explore the Serengeti. Because the park is immense, it takes time to transit between regions — from the central valley to the northern river zones. A 4-day stay lets you experience multiple biomes without feeling rushed.

Yes — the Serengeti is one of the rare places to observe all of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Elephant, Black Rhino, and Cape Buffalo) in their natural habitat. Lions and leopards are commonly spotted, while the endangered black rhino is mostly resident around the Moru Kopjes in the south-central park.

An organised Serengeti safari is incredibly safe. Professional guides are highly trained in wildlife behaviour, park safety rules, and off-road navigation. Lodges and camps feature 24/7 security (such as Maasai askaris) to keep animals a safe distance from guest quarters.

Permanent lodges are built on solid foundations with extensive amenities — plunge pools, spas, fine dining, expansive decks. Mobile tented camps are luxurious canvas tents that move two to three times a year to follow the migration, placing you directly in the middle of the action with high-end comforts like plush beds and hot bucket showers.
