The open Mkata Floodplain gathers zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe and elephant across wide horizons — classic savannah game viewing without the northern crowds.
The open terrain makes lions and other predators exceptionally visible, often resting on termite mounds or hunting the plains game in clear view.
Mikumi is one of the few major parks you can reach comfortably by road from the coast — and one of the best suited to a guided self-drive.
Mikumi’s two seasons swing between concentrated dry-season game and lush green-season scenery.

Mikumi is about 290 km west of Dar es Salaam. On smooth paved roads it’s roughly a 4–5 hour drive, which makes it the most accessible major park from the coast and ideal for a short safari.
Mikumi is home to four of the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo. Wild rhinos are not resident, so for the full set you’d pair Mikumi with a rhino destination like Ngorongoro.
Yes — Mikumi is highly recommended for guided self-drives thanks to its open terrain, good tracks and easy road access. A TANAPA guide fee applies and is well worth it for navigation and wildlife knowledge.
Pack lightweight, neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a warm layer for cool mornings, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and binoculars. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies.
