Yes — the crater is one of the few places on Earth where all Big Five can be seen in a single morning, including the endangered black rhino, thanks to the caldera walls concentrating wildlife year-round.
The mandatory NCAA fees are high — a per-person conservation permit ($70.80) plus a $295-per-vehicle crater service fee. Sharing a vehicle spreads the descent fee, which is why larger groups pay much less each.
Pickup is around 05:30 AM and you’ll return to your Arusha hotel by roughly 07:00 PM. The early start maximises time on the crater floor when animals are most active.
A warm fleece for the cold, foggy rim at dawn, sun protection for midday, a camera with zoom, and small cash for tips. Everything else — permits, lunch, water and transport — is included.
